Chapter II: Cousin Axel, The Train Robber
โWhen the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!โ
Alain Boubil/Herbert Kretzmer
1900s, you forgotten decade, what shaped your subjects? What did they want? What did they dream of? Pieces of gold? Rest? If so, what battles were at hand? Quite a few is the simple, and frankly deliberately and with full meaning simplified, answer. The final part of the 19th century had created a pent-up need and a longing for freedom and better living conditions among the many souls and hungry stomachs across the world.
In the wider, greater world we see the first Russian revolution of 1905. Having begun as a popular uprising against Tsar Nicholas II already in 1904, it one year later had exploded.
At our home front, in the medium-sized to tiny world we are working on the โNorwegian questionโ and early autumn 1905, the Swedish government โ after an escalating and volatile situation where Norway, on September 13th, had mobilized and the Swedish navy lays ready and battleโprepared off Bohuslรคn โ makes the decision to dissolve the Swedish-Norwegian union. The Swedish Social Democracy had worked consistently, all along, against the war agitation.
This year of our Lord 1905 and the years that follow are full of tensions. Riots break out in Stockholm when sanitation workers go on strike, but positives also emerge such as when a workshop conflict leads to the recognition of the right to association to be recognized and a collective agreement with minimum wages to be drawn up. The Staaff government’s suffrage proposal falls in 1906, working-class families are evicted in Mackmyra and the legislation against anti-militarist propaganda is tightened, resulting in the government’s resignation. The anarchists Hinke Bergengren and Carl Schrรถder are suspended by the Social Democratic Workers’ Party, only to be ultimately expelled in 1908…
… and then we arrive at the year 1907, where our story makes a stopover and briefly settles. Chronologically, it claims to start there, but Agnes would have strongly objected to that.
Be that as it may… The peacefulness of Ascension Day is broken by strikebreaker riots and other political protests in ร dalen and mix with the death of Oscar II and Gustav V’s accession to the throne in the grand, fine Capital City. In for this particular storyโs very local part of the world, namely Scania, farmworker strikes break out. And in the innermost part of the tale, the very core, let’s call it the microcosm or simply the smoke-filled beer cafรฉs of Malmรถ, angry young men with ambitions, demands, and dangerous desires for rights and equality gather to change the world. Even, if only on the bottom line of their own bankbooks. It is about one or two โ according to some accounts, possibly three โ of these men that this chapter will deal. Their number is just as confounded and shrouded in the mists of history as their actual goals and motives for their actions.
And yes, we hear you! Those of you who shout 1908. Those who point out that surely โAmaltheaโ cannot be forgotten? But unfortunately, yes, it can! You will have to find your way to that bombing yourselves. Just as the historical account in the text above is a bit skewed, loose and frayed around the edges, and maybe even factually incorrect in one or two or three places, we stop at Sweden’s only train robbery.
Where? On the Simrishamn line.
When? Have you been listening poorly and not paid attention? 1907, of course.
1907
He leans against the dark wall of the house and lets it support him. He is alone now, and he no longer has to keep up the faรงade. A faรงade of certainty and of โI-know-what-I’m-doingโ. Of, workers of the world unite.
He can let go. Must not start thinking, it is over now. We have fought and triumphed in the fight for justice… and for money, lots of money! No, that is not a way to think, such ugly thoughts. But two birds with one hell of a bang! What is a postilion against all the victims that fell into the graves of the great revolutions?
Big words, noble pretenses but a small, cowardly, greedy man. Axel wants to be a good fighter, but he does not have the energy.
โI want what all of you have!โ
Things, objects, glitter and glory. Furniture, signet ring, watch chain and stick pin.
To hell with the revolution.
Radio interview transcription verbatim, 1964
โThe pounding on the door intensified. I had secured the heavy latch but the door to the conductor and passenger section was about to arch under their pressure. It was only a matter of time before they broke through and then our lives were at stake. Our freedom!โ
โIt was then, in fear and the sheer desperation, I threw the revoler up and fired a shot at him. A shot that later turned to have hit the bridge of his nose between the eyes.โ
1907
Axel gathers his thoughts, pulls the light and far too thin summer coat tighter around him, and starts walking up the street โ the street he knows like the back of his hand. For far too many years, he has walked it up and down in the quest for change or what other fucking nonsense. He does not have to put on an act anymore. The grand words he has learned at the meetings of the Young Socialist movement are no longer needed.
He has done it. The others talk. He has robbed a train. He has shot a man. Three times, he has pulled the trigger and shot. A man. In the face.
He picks up his bunch of keys if only two keys โ one for the yard and one for the apartment โ make up a bunch and puts it quietly in the yardlock. At least he will not have to wake the old man.
Friberg’s words in his ears:
โThe important thing now is to appear normal.โ
When father asks tomorrow where he has been, he will say that he has been to a dance in Tyllsta. Father will not react to the fact that there is no dancing at the pavillion in Tyllsta on Mondays. It has been far too long since something like that reached him.
Radio interview transcription verbatim, 1964
โWe were afraid of being discovered by the train staff. Then we ran out onto the platform and at the trainโs full speed we threw ourselves off from each platform and we landed on the ground a bit scratched up.โ
1907
Damn, how scared he had been but in which strange ways adrenaline works. You feel the fear but, like, it does not really affect you. You were in that place to do a thing, and you did. One put the mask on and picked up the revolver. It was so easy.
And now? The future! The money! The real … good… life. He wanted… No, was not allowed to think like that. Must seem normal.
Radio interview transcription verbatim, 1964
โThen we went overland to Sege. We walked with our feet, on my advice, in puddles and ditches as much as possible to mislead any tracking dogs or any decectives that were out.โ
1907
We, the great and mighty fine official political organizations, all distance ourselves from the incident and the perpetrators of violence.
We, the power elite, might carry out a revolution, but we do not rob trains.
We, the leaders of society, may shoot parts of entire populations, but we do not harm a simple state railway employee.
Now we all repent, justify ourselves and say:
โThe coup is a spur-of-the-moment idea from young wild minds. Not part of revolutionary plans.โ
Thatโs all.
And the society, the power and the uprightness in the form of the judge in the case and also the district court chief at Torna and Bara district court, Gustaf de Marรฉ concludes, rounds off and simply puts an end to the matter after the investigation:
โWith this, we hope that this revolution has been nipped in the bud.โ
2020
โRevolution? But wait, I thought you said it wasn’t…โ
โSilence in the hall, subject!โ
Radio interview transcription verbatim, 1964
โAs soon as the train arrived in Djurslรถv, an alarm was to be sent to the police and postal inspection in Malmรถ. Which it did.โ
2020
Sweden’s only train robbery was carried out on March 18th 1907 between Staffanstorp and Djurslรถv on the Simrishamn Line by Axel Fors and Alfred Friberg. They rob the train’s mail car and Fors shoots the postilion on duty, Johan Almรฉn, three times in the face when he resists.
Incredibly, Almรฉn survives the shots but is tormented for the rest of his life by the injuries he was sustained. The three bullets remain in his skull until his death because, with the surgery available of the time, they could not be surgically removed. The bullets also affected his professional life; because the shaking of a train could cause the bullets to dislodge, he could not continue his service with the State Railways.
Three weeks after the crime, Axel Fors is arrested by the police under the leadership of county detective Alfred Svensson. After a few police interrogations, he first confesses and a few days later his accomplice Friberg also makes a confession. In July, both of them are sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labor.
Fors and Friberg shared the loot, SEK 5 360 and 48 รถre, with two other accomplices who, however, were not present at the robbery itself. One of them, a lodger in Forsโs home, was sentenced to a โcustodial sentenceโ for receiving stolen goods, while another, more fortunate, soul was acquitted. Another person was allegedly involved in the robbery, according to Fors and Friberg, but escaped abroad. This mysterious stranger returns to Sweden in 1934. 27 years after the crime and two years after the statute of limitations for attempted murder and mail robbery expired.
18 years pass, and first Friberg is pardoned, followed by Fors and they are released. The two young men and the henchmen in the backwaters claimed and tried to defend themselves by saying that the robbery was part of a socialist endeavor. Something the police found hard to believe as Fors, for example, could not resist the temptation, just days after the robbery, to buy a new bicycle which he proudly showed off to his coworkers. Admittedly, the bicycle was red, but the color is hardly to be seen as a symbol of his struggle for socialism or the revolution. Rather a representation for those constant human weaknesses; greed, vanity and the desire to belong, to be allowed to be someone.

1925
On September 18th, the day Axel Fors is released from prison in Mariestad, his cousin Annie is 15 years old. On the June day in 1910 when she is born, Fors sits in prison and writes a poem to the newborn child. But since it is not particularly honorable to be related to a boastful, empathy-lacking train robber, the poem is eventually torn to pieces by Annie’s somewhat hot-tempered husband, Henning. Just like that.

Kapitel II: Kusin Axel, tรฅgrรฅnaren
โWhen the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!โ
Alain Boubil/Herbert Kretzmer
1900-talet, du bortglรถmda decennium, vad prรคglade dina undersรฅtar? Vad ville de? Vad drรถmde de om? Penningar? Vila?
Stora ord, goda fรถrevรคndningar men en liten, feg, girig man.
โ Jag vill ha det alla ni har!
Saker, ting, glitter och รคra. Mรถbler, klackring, klockkedja och krรฅsnรฅl.
ร
t helvete med revolutionen.

โ Bultandet i dรถrren รถkade.
I ansiktet.
Han slipper i alla fall vรคcka gubben.
Fribergs ord i รถronen:
โ Kuppen รคr ett hugskott ifrรฅn unga vildhjรคrnor. Inte ett led i revolutionรคra planer.
Bara s
โ Tig i salen, undersรฅte!

Den 18 september, den dag Axel Fors friges frรฅn fรคngelset i Mariestad รคr hans kusin Annie 15 รฅr. Bara sรฅ.
