…always filled with objects of astonishment
Märta Mattsson explains her astonishingly extraordinary jewellery by saying: “My jewellery deals with the tension that lies between attraction and repulsion.” May I just stupidly and simply add: “Totally, and like: Wow!”
According to Galleri Sebastian Schildt Märta Mattsson was born in Stockholm in 1982.
She trained at the Nääs factories in Sweden before studying at HDK (Academy of Design and Craft at Gothenburg University), the Royal College of Art in London, Tokyo Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry and Rhode Island School of Design.
Today Märta Mattsson teaches at HDK but is, at the same time, widely represented in exhibitions all over the world.

With her sublime jewellery rarities, which all always seem to birth wonder, Märta Mattsson’s have contributed to place the contemporary Swedish jewellery design on the international stage.
During spring 2025 Mattsson has a new solo exhibition, Mimlique, at Galerie Marzee, in the Netherlands.

“In a world where not many new and exotic breeds are discovered I use dead creatures in my pieces to evoke wonder. The creatures are transformed and reborn; given a new life as objects of astonishment.”

You will find Märta Mattsson’s pieces in collections at, for example, the Marzee Collection, the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Museum of Art and Design in New York and at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston
