Chapter 1
1935
Two rounds of beating
There was a smell of burning from the surrounding fields, where the farmers were burning off the fields. The shadows fell far behind the two girls.
โHave you heard that Skogsbergs is going to build a house out at number 5?โ
The new autumn coat was far too warm today, and Aina unbuttoned it as they walked.
โCan they afford that?โ
โApparently. You have to start by digging a big pit yourself, a big fucking hole where the basement is going to be.โ
โBut Skogsberg canโt work because he has a bad back. Thatโs what Mom says all the time.โ
โA bad back? Are you completely stupid? Itโs because he drinks and canโt get up in the mornings.โ
Gerdaโs dark bob framed her nasty remark, and Ainaโs blonde paleness merely resigned before it, as usual. At most, she raised her eyebrows. Although, they were so white-blonde that it was barely possible to perceive.
They continued in silence and left the large school buildingโs gaze, clad in brick, behind them. The Scanian clay in a dense, compact and, for once, useful form. The same route they walked four times a day. To school in the morning, home and back to eat at midday and then home again in the afternoon.
โThereโs a new movie with Errol Flynn showing at Saga. I bet youโre going to see it, of course, as in love with him as you are. Admit it! Youโre in love with him!โ
At first it might have seemed that Aina did not care to reply, but that was not quite the case. It was more that every time โ despite the fact it could sometimes happen several times a day โ she was just as surprised when Gerd was so deliberately cruel to her.
Their mothers would sometimes joke over a cup of coffee, about how Aina and Gerd could not live with each other but then, on the other hand, not without each other either. Just like the Nordh couple in 14 B. Aina had never really understood that line of reasoning. Because she was never deliberately nasty to Gerd. It was Gerd who all the time… Well, well, never mind.
โIโm not at all in love with him. Can you not just stop saying that all the time.โ
โAm I annoying?โ Gerd grinned contentedly.
It was another thing with Gerd; she never gave in either. When all other children had grown tired of squabble or a tease, in a group or one-on-one, she could go on for another hour. And then yet another hour… She had no natural off switch.
It could be small things like she refused to hand over a toy just to be annoying, or that she would not stop tickling you. Just trifles but, in the end, you became so tired of her that you just wanted to… But you did not, of course. You just endured it or went home. Worst was if they were at Ainaโs house. Then she would not get rid of Gerd at all, because it was of course inherent in the tease to torment until the other person could not stand it anymore, so Gerd leaving the scene of the crime, whether voluntarily or at someoneโs urging, was not part of the equation.
They rounded Hospital Street and there, on the other side the broad Boulevard with its trees on both sides โ actually simply Main Street, but for some reason renamed in common parlance to this not at all fitting but grand name, it had to do with the trees โ stood Gunnar, Axel, Gudmund, fat Berit and Juanita โ the last mentioned born fully Swedish and with Persson as her last name โ from Miss Hรถglundโs much notorious sixth grade. Notorious for anything but good things. The boys were smoking cigarettes on the sly. If it can be called smoking on the sly when it is done openly on the largest street in town. The two girls leaned against the plastered building wall and squinted up towards the afternoon sun. Axel had finished smoking and flicked away the cigarette butt with his thumb and forefinger and gave them a glance over the smoldering ember. But it was fine, Aina thought. They were on the other side of the street and why should the big sixth graders care about two girls from the second grade. But just then Gerd would, of course, show off and shouted straight across the street; as usual, completely unprovoked and only to get the attention she always longed for and sought at every turn:
โAina here is in love with Errol Flynn. She thinks he will marry her. And sheโs not even an idiot like Crazy Fredrik, she actually just believes heโs in love with her.โ
The reaction was not long in coming. Axel started to cross the street.
โAnd why should we care?โ
After a short hesitation, the other four followed him.
โIsnโt she your friend?โ, he continued, crossing the street.
โUh, yeah,โ Gerd stammered out, obviously shocked that Axel had even bothered to respond and was now heading towards her and Aina with the others in the gang right behind. Axel managed to get ahead of a smaller truck that briefly blocked the other four but quickly passed.
โSo why are you so fucking mean to her then?โ
Axel had now stopped right in front of Gerd and was looking down at her. Suddenly he spat straight in her face, grabbed her arm, and pulled her back around the corner to Hospital Street. Gerd cried out when Axel dragged her along, but Aina could not get a word out, and she stood as if petrified right there in the middle of the Boulevard, but the other four made sure to drag her along as well.
Axel continued, with Gerd in tow, two villas away from the corner lot and onto the third in the row, a deserted lot. The so-called โDirector Hammarโs lot.โ The lot where the famous and prosperous pea canner had the house that used to stand there demolished and had planned to build his elegant twelve-room villa in Nordic Classicism. That is, if it had not been for the unfortunate fact that he had invested a big chunk of his money in a now very ill-reputed brand of matches. No Swedish Grace was ever built there.
In there, among the bushes and scrub on the still visible old gravel driveway, they attracted less attention. Axel pushed Gerd down on her stomach on the ground and stood with his legs wide apart over her.
โWhat is it that you donโt get? One should be kind and loyal to oneโs friends. Iโve seen you in the schoolyard sometimes. Always after her. Or after someone else.โ
Aina still could not breathe, now even more shaken by the shock that Axel, the great dragon slayer, actually knew who they even were. Sure, it was not a giant school they attended, but large enough that one could disappear into the crowd and none of those in the gang lived anywhere near Aina and Gerd. If they had had siblings at the school, sure, but for some reason both girls were only children. At least for now.
โAnd you, you damn fool! You just let her be on you all the time. Never makes a sound. Are you a complete idiot or what?โ
Axel swung his arm at Aina without really meaning to hit, but she still fell down on her butt out of sheer fright. It was as if her legs consisted entirely of clear red currant jelly. He turned his attention back toward Gerd.
โI think itโs about time someone taught this little piece a lesson. Berit! Juanita! Shut her up.โ
Gudmund smiled as widely as anyone could smile. Axel had just made his day considerably less gloomy.
โYeah, girlsโ fight! Girlsโ fight! Girlsโ fight!โ, he chanted, showing the large gap he had in his upper front jaw. It was in a now famous fight with lawyer Tenzerโs son Gillis โ who had been in sixth grade at the time but had since continued on to secondary school โ last spring that his front tooth had been knocked out.
Rumor had it that his father out in Spรฅnget, where the family rented rooms in a run-down old farmstead, had simply stated that if he was so โfucking stupid that he got beaten up by that herring-milksop of a boyโ then he might as well go through life toothless. If a well-combed herring butt with white hands, white shirt and clean nails could hit that hard, you had to take what you got. Truth be told, Gudmund probably got off lightly that day because of the sheer shock it was for his father, the large-built coal hauler, that such a blunder could even have occured at all. Otherwise, it was rumored that he laid hands on both wife and children out there in Spรฅnget several times between new moons.
Gerd screamed.
โNo! Donโt beat me. I was just kidding!โ
But it was too late. Berit and Juanita had grabbed hold of her neck and arms, pressed her down against the ground, and began to beat her. Hard, hard they hit her on both her legs and across her back. Quickly they rolled her over on her back and continued to punch and kick her in the stomach and in the face. They spat on her and yelled. Fat Berit was the worst, both with her blows and the abuse she hurled.
โYou fucking bastard! Youโre so fucking disgusting, not having a father. Whatโs it like to have a mom that at first just spreads her legs for anyone at all, and then an ugly, disgusting, fucking little gypsy louse like you comes out?โ
The girls pressed Gerdโs face down into the parched, bone-dry gravel, baked hard after the hot summer. Dust rose around them, and Gerdโs face was bleeding badly. Blood was running from her nose and her lip looked split.
Suddenly, it was as if Aina had awakened from a sleep longer than a Sleeping Beauty on opium. She tore herself free from Gunnar, who before the assault began had raised her up and then held her arms fairly loosely behind her back, and went on the attack. She bit and screamed, but above all she used her nails. The adrenaline surged through her. She scratched and clawed and in the midst of this sudden and brief psychosis in which she found herself in, she was nonetheless very strategic; she attacked only the girlsโ faces. She did, however, also manage to get in a bite on Juanitaโs ear, feeling a piece of the earlobe come loose and land on her tongue, complete with the taste of blood and everything. She had time to think that that taste would make her vomit later.
Fat Berit and Juanita howled and screamed and, crawling in the gravel, began to pull back from Gerd, who lay in a heap beneath all three of them. Gudmund continued to shout, โGirlsโ fight!โ with a frenzy that spoke of genes not entirely sound and sane. Axel and Gunnar, who at first more or less had stood with their hands in their pockets and lazily watched Gerd being beaten, began to grasp the seriousness of Ainaโs attack and Gunnar said:
โFor hellโs sake! Come on. Letโs get out of here. This is no fucking good!โ
All five began to retreat towards the open garden gate. Fat Berit and Juanita did so with some difficulty, since Aina did not give up but hung onto their heels a good distance down the driveway.
When she finally let go of them and their legs, and the five of them were on their way off down Hospital Street again, Juanita shouted:
โAina! Youโll pay for this. A fucking orphanage brat like you will not get away. Go home to your parents and ask where you come from, you disgusting, little creep.โ
After what felt like hours but was probably only five minutes of madness on the part of everyone involved, it was suddenly all over. The gang was gone. The abandoned lot was as quiet as ever, confused in its houselessness as it was.
Aina crawled, on all fours, back over to Gerd who just lay completely motionless and passive. Aina herself simply sat straight up and down on the driveway like a doll placed as a decoration with her legs spread and her arms resting along her sides.
Then eventually Gerd begins to move as well. Laboriously, she too sits up. Wipes away the blood that runs under her nose.
โI bit off her earlobe. I had to spit out the piece,โ says Aina.
โShut up,โ Gerd replies.
โBut…โ
โDamn you, if you get cocky about this. This was nothing! Do you get it! I could have defended myself.โ
Aina just keeps quite.
โDonโt think youโre anything special because of this.โ
Gerd too falls silent.
When she resumes her voice is more tired. Her face blue, red and swollen. Her anger no longer has the strength to reach all the way through.
Time passes. Where they sit in the old gardenโs, for September, unusual heat Aina feels she can almost see Gerdโs swollen lip grow bigger and bigger with every minute. The shadows are now no longer afternoon-long, but hint at an imminent, colder evening.
Two silent, bloody and battered eight-year-olds on a gravel driveway. In the end, it is Aina who breaks the silence again.
โWhat did she mean when she said I should ask Mother and Father where I come from?โ
Gerd continues to be silent for a while longer, hesitates, but then staggers to her feet and says:
โHow the hell should I know!โ
She can feel the taste of blood in her mouth.

Kapitel 1
1935
Tvรฅ parti stryk
Det luktade brรคnt frรฅn รฅkrarna runtomkring dรคr bรถnderna svedde.
โ Ont i ryggen? รr du helt dum i huvet?
Den skall vรคl du se sรฅ kรคr som du e i han. Erkรคnn! Du e kรคr i han!
tminstone รคn sรฅ lรคnge.
du din jรคvla fรฅne! Du bara lรฅter henne va pรฅ dig hela tiden.
Berit! Juanita! Ge henne pรฅ kรคften.
Gudmund log sรฅ stort som nรฅgon kunde le. Axel hade precis gjort hans dag betydligt mindre dyster.
โ Ja, tรถsabrรฅk! Tรถsabrรฅk!
Gerd skrek.
โ Nรค! Slรฅ mej ente.
โ Jรคvla oรคkting!
Mรถdosamt sรคtter รคven hon sig upp. Torkar undan blodet som rinner under nรคsan.
โ Jag bet av hennes รถrsnibb. Jag fick spotta ut biten, sรคger Aina.
โ Hรฅll kรคften, svarar Gerd.
โ Menโฆ
โ Fan ta dig dig om du blir mallig fรถr det hรคr. Det hรคr var ingenting! Fattar du! Jag kunde fรถrsvarat mig sjรคlv.
Aina bara tiger.
โ Tro inte att du e nรฅt speciellt fรถr detta.
Gerd tystnar ocks
Nรคr hon bรถrjar prata igen รคr hennes rรถst trรถttare. Hennes ansikte blรฅtt, rรถtt och svullet. Argheten orkar inte hela vรคgen fram lรคngre.
Tiden gรฅr.
โ Ente fan vet jag!
Hon kรคnner blodsmaken i munnen.
