ETERNALLY OWNED IS BUT WHAT IS LOST XXXI

Chapter XXXI: Anna, 49 meets Anna, 39

โ€œAnyone can become angry โ€“ that is easy,
but to be angry with the right person,
to the right degree, at the right time,
for the right purpose,
and in the right way โ€“ that is not easy.โ€
Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics

Anna, 49 years old, visits Anna, 39 years old

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYou seem to have taken it a little bit too andante.
[Hums ABBA.]โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be so grumpy. I admit: Obstinacy punishes itself in the end.

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œIt worked as long as we believed it was about a Greek beach babe who would โ€˜play her time and time again and make her strongโ€˜. Scarlett and Veronica should have taught us. Though, they both would have told us not to chicken out. โ€˜Chin up! After all, tomorrow is another day.

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œItโ€™s double-edged. Veronica has her Gremlins, after all. Scarlett is also lousy and useless as an alter ego. She is definitely also bipolar.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAlso?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œHm, weโ€™re perhaps a bit too well-schooled in diagnoses these days. Although theyโ€™ve probably always fascinated or been romanticized? ADHD is so 2014 and for heavenโ€™s sake, donโ€™t be schizophrenic like a great-grandfather. It will never be right.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œPersonally, Iโ€™m just as tired of everyone being โ€œburned outโ€ as I once was of everyone who had gastritis. Why canโ€™t they not just say it as it is? D-e-p-r-e-s-s-s-i-o-n.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
[Laughs.]
โ€œI had forgotten all those who chewed Losec as cough drops back in like โ€˜93.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œThe fact that you are depressed, a drunk, burned out or simply mean is a circumstance, a context. Not the cause that makes you feel bad, do, or say what you do.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œSincerity is the new mortal sin. Shit, I sometimes wish I was Melanie Hamilton. So damn peaceful. Not act. Not react.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAre you joking? I mean, seriously! The biggest wimp in film history?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œJust wait things out. And! Who was it that got the prince?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œThe prince? She got the biggest wimp in film history. Who the hell wants Ashley?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œScarlett.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œOkay, but thatโ€™s the greatest mystery in film history. Besides, we will never be Melanie.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œHow do you know that?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAre you kidding!โ€

Anna, 49 years old
[Laughs.]
โ€œYes.โ€

[Silence.]

Anna, 49 years old
[Upset.]
โ€œYou still have the strength to hope. Everything you believe in can go to hell, because it doesnโ€™t exist. Fall in line. Reality came first. When you think that it canโ€™t get any worse. Thenโ€ฆโ€
โ€œThen, the water is shut off while youโ€™re in the shower, with your head full of shampoo on the way to a funeral. Or you pee yourself in the elevator from all the coffee and sparkling water, two diuretics and one Valium on the way home from another funeral.โ€
โ€What you believed in, it didnโ€™t happen. Itโ€™s better not to be honest. Be The Joker… Heath Ledger…โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œWhat, did you say?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œThis adapted difficulty to hear is damn annoying. Hello?! Who the hell is running these fucking conversations between us?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œThe one who will make sure that I donโ€™t lose hope.โ€

[Silence.]

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œThey have taken pictures of one of Plutoโ€™s moons and determined that there is water.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œOn the planet or the moon?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI donโ€™t know. But it took nine years for the spacecraft that took the pictures to get there. Can you imagine sitting and waiting for a few pictures for nine years and why does a moon even orbit a planet for millions of years?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œHm, orbiting a โ€œmoonโ€ is a bit too well-known a topic, so in this case we probably shouldnโ€™t tell people how to live their lives?

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œDonโ€™t smiley-face me. Adults congratulating each other with cartoon fireworks? What is that? And youโ€™re right, you really should stop orbiting around Peter.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œThen where do I go?โ€

[Silence.]

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œIโ€™ve finally put together the album with all of grandadโ€™s America-photos. Grandad, the selfie lover! He would have loved to live now and take pictures of himself all the time!โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œSelfie? Everyone likes to take photos and show off, donโ€™t they?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œVideo killed the radio star, and the selfie killed the time between the pictures. Crap or happiness, but before it was and existed in the pictures. Not just the โ€œprettyโ€ and the time in between, one had to try to remember as best one could. Printed paper photographs with parentheses in between of memories that tied us together with the present. The pictures connected us to what we had lost that was not in a picture, the parentheses.โ€
โ€Now image, on image on image. Everything is in a photo. The memory never gets to work on its own, because we believe that it is the only and true reality we see in the pictures. The pictures donโ€™t lie. But thatโ€™s precisely what they do.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œI donโ€™t understand?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œThat one used to appreciate what had already been. Not all the time lived for the next picture, and that we ourselves were allowed to control the spaces in between.โ€
โ€œDo you really think I could have written these dialogues if everything was caught on camera? Preserved in a photo? If everything were documented, if I were not allowed to fabricate based my own memory.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œBut youโ€™ve always had the latest camera?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYes, but it took time to see the picture.โ€
โ€œAh, what the hell, whatever! As for Grandad and Albin, they were not coming home, so they didnโ€™t need any memories. I guess, they just wanted to be there and then, in that moment.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAnd thatโ€™s wrong?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œNo. itโ€™s me who thinks too much about the past and makes damn albums.โ€

Silence.

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI read a question that Iโ€™ve been thinking about: โ€˜Are you the catalyst or the catastrophe?

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œDamn. The catalyst?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œAt work and in the family, perhaps, but inside weโ€™re just a catastrophe, arenโ€™t we?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œHow negative you are! You ask questions to get things out of the way. Those who are not prepared end up disappointed in the end.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYou wish! But fine, I donโ€™t say โ€˜maybeโ€™ either if I mean โ€˜noโ€™. I donโ€™t need to be understood by people or seem nice. Itโ€™s enough to be sensible.

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œIt started with he the dentist who used metal thimbles on his fingertips. We bite.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œHim. โ€˜Him the dentistโ€™, and I donโ€™t bite. Iโ€™m as polite as can be. I just want to avoid half-truths and the fact-resistant ones.

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œ
The fact-resistant?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œItโ€™s fucking hard to talk to you. The ones who made Trump president. Children of our time.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œSometimes youโ€™re violently funny.โ€
[Laughs.]
โ€œTrump! Do you remember the pink marble in Trump Tower, shit, how impressed we were. That, I know we have photos of! But president, heโ€™s not likely to become.
[Laughs.]
โ€œBut, the last thing, good topic. Children. Where do we stand there?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œCan we please finish one topic before starting another.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œSo, you havenโ€™t solved that question?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œSince I, the catastrophe doesnโ€™t always spread harmony, happy thoughts and comfort around me โ€“ no, I havenโ€™t solved it!โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œI guess Iโ€™ll have to change direction then. But I do want this with Peter to become something.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œThat! That was as real as if youโ€™re sore IRL from an imaginary bruise that youโ€™d gotten from your imaginary friend. Just another unfulfilled daydream.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œDonโ€™t be sad. Oh my God, youโ€™re crying. Hey, I didnโ€™t mean anything bad by it. Please, donโ€™t be sad. My God! Youโ€™re really crying. For real.โ€
โ€œWhatโ€™s happening? Now I feel completely powerless.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œMe too.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAnd surprised.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œMe too.โ€

[Silence.]

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œDid you know that the word livslรถgn, life-lie, doesnโ€™t have a direct translation into English. Life-illusion seems to be the most commonly used.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAn illusion. Better than a lie. A good magician knows that people are always looking where the light falls.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œWe think weโ€™re telling it like it is. But I think weโ€™re fooling ourselves. Looking towards the light.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œDonโ€™t be so hard on yourself. Everyone does that, donโ€™t they.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œSometimes itโ€™s also translated it as โ€˜basic lieโ€™. Isnโ€™t that what you live by? In? The belief that it will always get better down the road even though it gets worse.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œSo, if I really swing the scissors, instead of holding them properly along my leg, thatโ€™s better?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI donโ€™t know. But mix the catalyst with the illusion and BAM! and youโ€™ve created a catastrophe for yourself. You get it? Itโ€™s no good. Itโ€™s just crap! And here we are. Goddam fucking hell!โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYou. Youโ€™re there. Not me.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI hate you! You were supposed to lead me to something that never happened. Here we sit like the Mad Hatter, drink disgusting tea. Every day. At the same time. I mean, you donโ€™t have to be called Alice to accuse you of having us snared by Miss Time and Mr. Circumstance.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYouโ€™re the one who set the table and wasted time. Who talk illogically and feel sorry for yourself.โ€

[Silence.]

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYesterday when I was putting on my makeupโ€ฆโ€
โ€Like for a whole damn second. I thought… I had time to feel that โ€˜Damn! Now Iโ€™ve gone psychotic, just like Veronica.

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œJust like whom?โ€
โ€A millisecond. It probably wasnโ€™t a full second. One second, thatโ€™s actually quite a long time.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI wasnโ€™t there! We get so fucking lost. We are not reaching any goals.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œโ€™Fill up the glasses, since werโ€™e here for life,
And flatter Dr Gamme and his wife,
For looking in the mirror tells you true,
Itโ€™s Dr Gamme who looks back at you.
โ€œLarkin. I just thought it โ€˜mirroredโ€™ what you were saying.
[Laughs.]

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œAre you completely stupid? Do you know that I almost daily think that when mom and dad are gone, thereโ€™s nothing stopping me from jumping over the cemetery wall. Do you know that? Did you know that?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œCalm down. Suicide?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œOh, so that you heard! That, you actually took in! It got through.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œBut weโ€™ve never, never thought like that.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œNo, my silly little nitwit, but now we do, pretty damn often, actually. You get that! Because thereโ€™s nothing after that. Then weโ€™re alone. Fucking lonely.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œBut little brother, the rest of the family…โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œWeโ€™ll become Aunt Millicent. You get it! Weโ€™ll end up like Mille. Mom takes care of her now. Despite all the harsh words.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œBut ifโ€ฆโ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œThere are no ifs, no men either. Thereโ€™re only thousands of ideas you never saw through because it was your turn at the checkout. For milk. For some goddamn milk.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œWell, you have to eat.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYes, and with or without Valium, I continue my day. But sure, you donโ€™t stay as slim as you are, when youโ€™re suppressing the anxiety.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œThatโ€™s unfair! But sedatives…?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œDonโ€™t worry. It passes but youโ€™re tired. I can handle far more than I thought I could, yet still always wish I was a really dumb, happy-go-lucky blonde.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œColor me content! Long live hydrogen peroxide!โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYouโ€™re quick to joke and laugh. Itโ€™s a bit contagious but even bleach doesnโ€™t work as it used to. It stops working after a certain time, supposedly to be โ€˜good for the environmentโ€™โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œSo, you want both a perfect hair day and your own private helipad? Itโ€™s cool. โ€˜Iโ€™ve got a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it weasel.
[Laughs.]

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œDamn it! I fail you so bad, but when you finally understand me, we get nowhere. We get stuck.โ€

Anna, 11 years old
โ€œWell, Iโ€™m for one is glad you have your imagination, your weird thoughts and your quirky whims left.โ€

Anna, 18 years old
โ€œAnd Iโ€™m glad you still have your stubborn streak. Are you maybe even a little, little kinder to yourself?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œWell, hello, there! There, you popped up like some kind of ghoul-children in a Maria Gripe novel!โ€

Anna, 11 years old
[Laughs.]
โ€œNope! Weโ€™re actually Bishop Vergeusโ€™ girls!โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYeah, I can totally believe that.โ€
[Laughs loudly.]
โ€œBut, you know what, then I think you should go and disappear back into the cold, rushing stream again!โ€

Anna, 18 years old
โ€Youโ€™re not kinder to yourself.โ€
[Disappear.]

[Pause.]

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAnd there they went!โ€
โ€œWell, wellโ€ฆโ€
โ€œWell, Iโ€™ve broken up with Kierkegaard at least. You canโ€™t lose your footing when youโ€™ve never really dared in the first place. I no longer write his quote in the President-calendar every year. What is it you always say? โ€˜Iโ€™m out walking the dead again.โ€™ That seems to be where youโ€™re at. You sound depressed.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œNothing reaches me behind the rouge. But sure, I get up. Blow dry my hair and all that. If weโ€™re not cremated, we rot.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œA mid-life crisis. I wouldnโ€™t have thought that of us.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œDo you know what my dreams are made of these days? Ladies and gentlemen! My dreams! Money! A big fucking pile of money. Ta-da!โ€
โ€œMy nightmares! I never checked the age of the damned, bastard stork. Ta-da!โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œWhat was it you didnโ€™t check?โ€ We check everything.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œIt annoys me more than it used to that you canโ€™t hear me. Youโ€™re the last chance to change anything. Listen up!โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œWhat?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œSome things I โ€˜m allowed to tell, others Iโ€™m not. As Brecht said, โ€˜The man who laughs. Has simply not yet heard, the terrible news.

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œWe get to talk about old truths and problems. For any new viewers… Ants, static on the screen.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI put on lip gloss and ask people how theyโ€™re doing, even if they donโ€™t ask me back. I used to think that was normal. But I canโ€™t do it anymore. I just want to wonder: โ€˜What the hell is the difference between gravlax sauce and Swedish mustard-dill sauce?โ€™ and stop giving a damn about โ€˜the mood in the roomโ€™ or how everyone else is feeling.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYou grow geraniums and like cured salmon with gravlax sauce. Who are you?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI only eat hot-smoked salmon. Iโ€™m childless.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAnd you wonder why youโ€™re stuck? Think of what Mary always says: โ€˜You became what you became when you didnโ€™t become as you were supposed to.

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œMary is dead.โ€
โ€œDamn! What happened to the time when you didnโ€™t have to pay thirty-five crowns for a GB ice cream and Bowie wasnโ€™t dead? When you could slam down the phone on people.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œI didnโ€™t catch that last part. Static.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œThe static, like our tinnitus.โ€
โ€œBut maybe itโ€™s hormones these days? My mind goes from fear to something else faster than a Formula 1 pit stop. I have a very well-developed je ne sais quoi [read; huh?] for anxiety.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYou canโ€™t talk in square brackets.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œItโ€™s no less realistic than me talking to you, is it?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œOur anxiety actually doesnโ€™t make the world go round. Who do you hang out with?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œNot many. Fewer and fewerโ€ฆโ€
โ€œBeing honest about not always feeling okay has defined how people see me, the image of me.โ€
โ€œEveryone assumes itโ€™s depression. Nothing could be further from the truth. Itโ€™s fear.โ€
โ€œPure fear. The catalysts are always the same. Sometimes, but not so often anymore, the performance anxiety, but always, always, the money worries.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYes, and yet 90 percent of people only the see a โ€˜happy, annoyingly talkativeโ€™ Anna.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œAnd some people see the Negative Supernova. Sometimes I think people are just as open as I am, but then I realize it was a kind of joke. At my expense. They havenโ€™t lost anything.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œTheyโ€™re protecting themselves. You have to respect that, right.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œIโ€™ve picked that up. Sometimes Iโ€™m so vague myself nowadays that not even I understand what I mean. Like people do. They donโ€™t risk being themselves. If you just speak nonsense convincingly enough.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œOkay, okay, words, words, words. You isolate yourself. That worries me.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œDonโ€™t exaggerate. Everyone has less and less of a social life as the years go by. But why did we show what was under the varnish?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œStop! Self-pity doesnโ€™t suit you.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œTrue altruism can only come from the family. The rest is just some kind of need for affirmation.

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œDonโ€™t we usually say that weโ€™re defined by our family and our friends because then weโ€™re a damn good person?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI donโ€™t know anymore. When I swipe my credit card at the checkout because I donโ€™t have a penny left in cash, it doesnโ€™t help to think โ€˜Iโ€™m a good person in other ways.โ€˜ anymore.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œThey had helped us earlier in life as well. Money.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œPeople who could help, practically and pragmatically, but constantly throw out an โ€™I wish I could help you.
โ€œThose are the ones I want to scream at! โ€˜Donโ€™t throw platitudes at me!โ€™ The ones who forces me to answer: โ€˜But please, sweet dear you, of course you should noooot feel like thaaaat!
โ€œMaking me validate them! I mean, for godโ€™s sake!โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€Mmmmโ€ฆ But self-pityโ€ฆ Watch outโ€ฆโ€

[Silence.]

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYeah, I know! I know. Stop looking at me like that!โ€
โ€œIโ€™m just so tired of being grateful โ€˜about the small things in lifeโ€™. Not even the scent of Mildredโ€™s Mock orange a day in July works anymore.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œWhat?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI said that no one will ever call us โ€˜poor little rich girlโ€™.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œNot โ€˜Legsโ€˜ either.โ€
[Laughs.]
โ€œSorry, I shouldnโ€™t be laughing. Or make it into a joke. I mean, I can tell that you are not feeling well.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œItโ€™s fine. People can absolutely call us Freddie Mercury.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œBecause weโ€™re the great pretenderโ€ฆโ€
โ€œShame can be a very dangerous thing. One has to dare to ask for help. How are you with having people over? And… Drum roll… Do they get to keep their shoes on?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œAre you kidding? Thatโ€™s my last remaining intrusive thought.โ€

Anna, 39 years old & Anna, 49 years old
โ€œMy dear little darling, Swede! Youโ€™re no more continental for letting people to walk into your home with their shoes on, as it makes me Japanese for not to allowing it.โ€
[Laughs both.]

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAnd those people who say: โ€˜My door is always open!โ€™ The whole point with doors is to close them. Replace their open doors with a big, fat void, and letโ€™s see what happens to their hospitality!โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œOur void.โ€

[Silence.]

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œIf everythingโ€™s that hopeless, then change things! And for Godโ€™s sake, stop acting so hard to get used to!โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œTo be understood. How awful.โ€
โ€œDonโ€™t roll your eyes! I was being ironic! It worries me too that my brain has stopped expecting good things to happen, but if one day I wake up and the day is the tomorrow I wished for yesterday, will I then be disappointed?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œDammit! Stop expounding and enough with the monologues! Get angry instead! Be me!โ€
โ€œDonโ€™t be such a passive wimp with such b-i-g words. Come on, for fuckโ€™s sake! Youโ€™re not some fucking fragile Meissen-ballerina and you havenโ€™t lost the argument until youโ€™ve taken off your shoes, thrown them at your opponent and missed.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œTossing a small ball was never our thing.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œPull yourself together! Youโ€™re not dying yet. And hey, that whole โ€˜Now I am quietly waiting for the catastrophe of my personality to seem beautiful again, and interesting, and modern.โ€™, is stolen and, above all, so played out.โ€
โ€œAnd, hey! What if you actually meet someone who gets the point when we introduce ourselves as Space Cowboy, the Gangster of Love and Maurice.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œThree surprises in one. I actually decided to change my life once, so I changed my phone number.โ€

[Silence.]

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œIt was me. I was the one who changed the phone number.

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œHey there, you Space-y cowboy, great initiative! Who is Keyser Zรถse? Do you get it?

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYes, of course I get it. Iโ€™m not an idiot but skip the irony. At least I tried. So, youโ€™ve given up? Just like that?โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œWell, you know, as long as one has a Valium, a good pillow, a pint of Ben & Jerryโ€™s and all the Christmas specials of โ€˜The Vicar of Dibleyโ€™ nearby.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYouโ€™ve really have given up?โ€
[Falls silent.]

[Silence.]

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œI have a few book ideas.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYaaay! Weโ€™re back! And now our catchphrase is: โ€˜For Award Considerations Only.

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYou donโ€™t stream movies illegally yet, so what do you know about that? But sure, strike camp, strike camp! The new day shows its light. Our great adventure has no end in sight, so wouldnโ€™t it be nice if the monster under the bed one day fell in love with our guardian angel.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œTrip away; make no stay; Meet me all by break of day.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œWell, isnโ€™t that just like you? A proper little Puck.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œItโ€™s not Puck saying that. Itโ€™s Obe…โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œOberon. I know. Shut up now! Positive thinking here we go. Iโ€™m definitely going to start using the expensive black BLK DNM jeans and throw out the Lindex jeans that I use to save on the others.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œAh, but what the hell? I couldnโ€™t even keep up.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œBecause youโ€™re not here.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œThe intention must be to…โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œBut then again, good intentions can be just as bad as bad ones. Iโ€™m just trying to adjust our internal PA system.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œYou have all the answers as usual. Thatโ€™s something we were supposed to try to get away from too.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œYouโ€™re hearing me clearly all of a sudden! Even the sadness? Can you move on now?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œMemento mori and my inner irony tells me that I should embrace and take this insight to heart today; not tomorrow because then, naturally, in the spirit of transience and impermanence, it will be gone.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
The B-I-G words didnโ€™t start with me. Should I say something wise, or use another movie metaphor?โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œLetโ€™s go movie.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œThen I wish I had a DeLorean.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œLike if.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œHear me out! โ€˜Your future hasnโ€™t been written yet โ€“ no oneโ€™s has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one.โ€™โ€
โ€œIt was you who said, โ€˜Go movie!

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œMarty McFly is stressed and miserable in all the films because he has answers that he canโ€™t cope with.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œHence, why we have to stop meeting like this.โ€
โ€œBy the way, โ€˜halvlyckligโ€™, you know like โ€˜half-happyโ€™ is also better in English because you could say โ€˜half past happy.โ€™ Then, at least then youโ€™ve been happy, even if youโ€™re just a little past it now.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œWeโ€™re like everyone else then.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œWho let Atlanta burn and Bobby stay in the shower.โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œLet go.โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œFor Godโ€™s sake!โ€

Anna, 39 years old
โ€œOkay, sorry! But only someone who has lost his way can reach the unexpected clearing in the forest. Tran…โ€

Anna, 49 years old
โ€œโ€ฆ strรถmmer. โ€˜On the road in the long darkness. My wristwatch stubbornly glimmers with timeโ€™s captured insect.
โ€œI guess Iโ€™ll just do what I usually do, step on every manhole cover just to see where it leads. Or something.โ€

Kapitel XXXI: Anna, 39 mรถter Anna, 49

โ€Vem som helst kan bli arg โ€“ det รคr lรคtt;
men att vara arg pรฅ rรคtt person,
i rรคtt grad, vid rรคtt tidpunkt,
av rรคtt anledning
och pรฅ rรคtt sรคtt โ€“ รคr inte lรคtt.โ€
Aristoteles, Nikomachiska etiken

Anna, 49 รฅr besรถker Anna, 39 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Du tycks ha tagit det lite vรคl andante.
[Nynnar ABBA.]

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Det funkade sรฅ lรคnge vi trodde det handlade om en grekisk beachbabe som skulle โ€™play her time and time again and make her strongโ€™. Scarlett och Veronica borde ha lรคrt oss. Fast de hade bรฅda sagt till oss att inte att fega. Chin up! After all tomorrow is another day.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Det รคr dubbelt. Veronica har ju sina Gremlins. Scarlett รคr dessutom kass som alter ego. Hon รคr definitivt ocksรฅ bipolรคr.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Ocksรฅ?

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Hm, vi รคr kanske lite vรคl skolade i diagnoser idag.

Sรฅ fรถrbannat fridfullt. Inte agera. Inte reagera.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Skรคmtar du? Alltsรฅ, verkligen! Den stรถrsta mesen i filmhistorien?

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Bara vรคnta in saker. Och! Vem var det som fick prinsen?

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Prinsen? Hon fick filmhistoriens allra stรถrsta mes. Vem fan vill ha Ashley?

Anna, 49 รฅr
Scarlett.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Okej, men det รคr filmhistoriens stรถrsta mysterium. Dessutom blir vi aldrig Melanie.

Anna, 49 รฅr
Hur vet du det?

Anna, 39 รฅr
Skojar du!

Anna, 49 รฅr
[Skrattar.]
โ€“ Ja.

[Tystnad.]

Anna, 49 รฅr
[Upprรถrd]
Rรคtta dig i ledet. Verkligheten kom fรถrst. Nรคr du tรคnker att vรคrre kan det inte bli. Dรฅโ€ฆ
Be The Jokerโ€ฆ Heath Ledgerโ€ฆ

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Va, sa du?

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Denna anpassade svรฅrighet att hรถra รคr jรคvligt irriterande. Hallรฅ?! Vem fan styr de hรคr jรคvla samtalen mellan oss?

Anna, 39 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Hm, att cirkulera kring en โ€mรฅneโ€ รคr ett lite fรถr vรคlkรคnt รคmne sรฅ i detta fall bรถr vi nog inte rรฅda folk hur de ska leva sina liv? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Smiley face:a mig inte.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Video killed the radio star och selfien killed tiden mellan bilderna.

Anna, 39 รฅr
Jag fattar inte?

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
Men du har ju alltid haft den senaste kameran?

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
Fan. Katalysatorn?

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ You wish! Men visst jag sรคger inte heller โ€™kanskeโ€™ om jag menar โ€™nejโ€™. Jag behรถver inte fรถrstรฅs av folk eller verka rar. Det rรคcker att vara vettig.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Det bรถrjade med han tandlรคkaren som anvรคnde metallhylsor pรฅ fingertopparna. Vi bits.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Honom. โ€™Honom tandlรคkarenโ€™, och jag bits inte. Jag รคr hur artig som helst. Jag vill bara slippa halvsanningar och faktaresistenta.

Anna, 39 รฅr
Faktaresistenta?

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Bli inte ledsen. Jรถsses, du grรฅter. Alltsรฅ, jag menade inget illa. Snรคlla, var inte ledsen. Herre Gud! Du grรฅter verkligen. Pรฅ riktigt.
โ€“ Vad รคr detta? Nu kรคnner jag mig helt maktlรถs.

Anna, 49 รฅr
Jag med.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Och fรถrvรฅnad.

Anna, 49 รฅr
Jag med.

[Tystnad.]

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Var inte sรฅ hรฅrd. Det gรถr vรคl alla.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Ibland รถversรคtt det ocksรฅ med โ€™basic-lieโ€™. ร„r det inte det du lever efter? I? Tron att det alltid blir bรคttre lรคngre fram trots att det blir sรคmre.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Sรฅ om jag verkligen svingar saxen, i stรคllet fรถr att hรฅlla den ordentligt lรคngs med benet sรฅ รคr det bรคttre?

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ I donโ€™t know.

Anna, 39 รฅr
Precis som vem?
โ€“ Millisekund. Det var sรคkert inte en hel sekund. En sekund, det รคr ganska lรฅng tid.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Jag var inte dรคr! Vi gรฅr sรฅ jรคvla vilse. Vi nรฅr inga mรฅl.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ โ€Fill up the glasses, since werโ€™e here for life,
And flatter Dr Gamme and his wife,
For looking in the mirror tells you true,
Itโ€™s Dr Gamme who looks back at you.โ€
โ€“ Larkin. Jag tyckte bara att det โ€spegladeโ€ vad du berรคttade.
[Skrattar.]

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ ร„r du helt dum i huvudet? Vet du att jag nรคstan dagligen tรคnker att nรคr mamma och pappa inte finns hรคr mer, sรฅ finns inget som hindrar mig frรฅn att hoppa รถver kyrkogรฅrdsmuren. Vet du det? Visste du det?

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Lugna dig. Sjรคlvmord?

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Nรค, men minsann. Det hรถrde och uppfattade du minsann! Det gick in.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Men, vi har aldrig, aldrig tรคnkt sรฅ.

Anna, 49 รฅr
Jรคvligt ensamma.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Men lillebror, resten av familjenโ€ฆ

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Vi blir moster Millicent. Fattar du! Vi blir som Mille. Mamma tar hand om henne nu. Trots alla hรฅrda ord.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Menโ€ฆ

Anna, 49 รฅr
Fรถr mjรถlk. Fรถr nรฅgon jรคvla mjรถlk.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Man mรฅste ju รคta.

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Det var orรคttvist! Men lugnandeโ€ฆ?

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Oroa dig inte. Det gรฅr รถver men man รคr trรถtt. Jag kan hantera betydligt mer รคn jag trodde men รถnskar รคndรฅ alltid att jag var en riktigt dum, happy-go-lucky blonde.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Color me content! Long live vรคtesuperoxid!

Anna, 49 รฅr

โ€Iโ€™ve got a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it weasel.โ€
[Skrattar.]

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Fan, alltsรฅ! Jag sviker dig sรฅ men nรคr du till sist fรถrstรฅr du mig sรฅ kommer vi ingenstans. Vi fastnar.

Anna, 11 รฅr
โ€“ Ja, jag รคr i alla fall glad att du har din fantasi, dina konstiga funderingar och dina knรคppa infall kvar.

Anna, 18 รฅr
โ€“ Och jag รคr glad att du har din egensinnighet kvar. Och kanske, รคr du lite snรคllare mot dig sjรคlv?

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Nรคmen, hallรฅ! Dรคr, dรถk ni upp som nรฅgra slags gengรฅngarbarn i en Maria Gripe-roman!

Anna, 11 รฅr
[Skrattar.]
โ€“ Nix! Vi รคr faktiskt biskop Vergeus flickor!

Anna, 49 รฅr
Jo, det kan jag absolut tro.
[Skrattar hรถgt.]
โ€“ Men, vet ni vad, dรฅ tycker jag att ni ska ta och fรถrsvinna ner i den kalla, strรถmma รฅn igen!

Anna, 18 รฅr
โ€“ Du รคr inte snรคllare mot dig sjรคlv.
[Fรถrsvinner.]

[Paus.]

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Dรคr fรถrsvann dom!
โ€“ Ja, jaโ€ฆ
โ€Iโ€™m out walking the dead again.โ€ Det verkar vara dรคr du รคr. Du verkar deprimerad.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Inget nรฅr mig bakom rouget. Men visst, jag gรฅr upp. Fรถnar hรฅret och sรฅ. Kremeras vi inte sรฅ ruttnar vi.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Femtio-รฅrskris. Det trodde jag inte om oss.

Anna, 49 รฅr
Mina drรถmmar! Pengar! En stor jรคvla hรถg med pengar. Hepp!
โ€“ Mina mardrรถmmar! Jag kollade inte upp storkjรคvelns รฅlder. Hepp!

Anna, 49 รฅr
Vad var det du inte kollat? Vi kollar allting.

Anna, 49 รฅr
Du รคr ju sista chansen att fรถrรคndra nรฅgot. Listen up!

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Va?

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Mary รคr dรถd.
โ€“ Fan! Vad hรคnde med tiden nรคr man inte behรถvde betala trettiofem spรคnn fรถr en GB-glass och Bowie inte var dรถd? Kunde slรคnga luren i รถrat pรฅ folk.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Det sista hรถrde jag inte. Bruset.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Bruset, som vรฅr tinnitus.
โ€“ Men det รคr kanske hormoner nufรถrtiden? Mitt sinne gรฅr frรฅn rรคdsla till nรฅgot annat fortare รคn ett pit stop i Formula 1. Jag har ett vรคldigt vรคl utvecklat je ne sais quoi [lรคs; va?] fรถr oro.

Anna, 39 รฅr
Du kan inte prata i hakparenteser.

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Vรฅr รฅngest fรฅr faktiskt inte vรคrlden att gรฅ runt. Vem hรคnger du med?

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Inte sรฅ mรฅnga. Fรคrre och fรคrreโ€ฆ
โ€“ Att vara รคrlig med att jag inte alltid mรฅr bra har definierat hur folk ser mig, bilden av mig.
โ€“ Alla tror att det รคr depression. Inget kunde vara mer fel. Det รคr rรคdsla.
โ€“ Ren rรคdsla. Katalysatorerna รคr alltid desamma. Ibland, men inte sรฅ ofta lรคngre, prestationsรฅngesten men alltid, alltid, pengaoron.

Anna, 39 รฅr

Pรฅ min bekostnad. Dom har inte fรถrlorat nรฅgot.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ De skyddar sig. Det fรฅr man vรคl respektera.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Jag har tagit efter. Ibland รคr jag sjรคlv sรฅ vag numera att inte ens jag fรถrstรฅr vad jag menar. Sรฅ som folk gรถr. Riskerar inte att vara sig sjรคlva. Pratar man bara nonsens tillrรคckligt trovรคrdigt sรฅ.

Anna, 39 รฅr
Okej, okej, ord, ord, ord. Du isolerar dig. Det oroar mig.

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Sluta! Du klรคr inte i sjรคlvรถmkan.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ ร„kta altruism kan bara komma frรฅn familjen.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ De hade hjรคlpt oss tidigare i livet ocksรฅ. Pengarna.

Anna, 49 รฅr
Iiiinte skall du vรคl tรคnka sรฅรฅรฅรฅ!โ€
โ€“ Fรฅ mig att bekrรคfta dom! Alltsรฅ, va fan!

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Mmmmโ€ฆ Men sjรคlvรถmkanโ€ฆ Passa digโ€ฆ

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Inte โ€™Legsโ€™ heller.
[Skrattar.]
โ€“ Fรถrlรฅt, jag borde inte skratta. Eller skoja. Jag mรคrker ju att du inte mรฅr bra.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Det รคr lugnt. Folk kan absolut kalla oss fรถr Freddie Mercury.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Because weโ€™re the great pretenderโ€ฆ
Man mรฅste vรฅga be om hjรคlp. Hur รคr du med att bjuda hem folk dรฅ? Och โ€ฆdrum rollโ€ฆ fรฅr de gรฅ in med skor pรฅ?

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Skojar du? Det รคr min sista tvรฅngstanke.

Anna, 39 รฅr & Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Vรฅrt tomrum.

[Tystnad.]

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Om allt รคr sรฅ hopplรถst, dรฅ fรฅr du vรคl รคndra saker! Och fรถr fan, sluta spela svรฅr att vรคnja sig vid!

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Att vara fรถrstรฅdd. Sรฅ hemskt.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Fรถr fan! Sluta med alla dessa utlรคggningar! Bli arg i stรคllet! Var mig!
โ€“ Var inte en sรฅdan passiv mes med sรฅ s-t-o-r-a ord. Kom igen fรถr fan! Du รคr ingen jรคvla skรถr Meissen-ballerina och du har inte fรถrlorat diskussionen fรถrrรคn du tagit av dig skorna, kastat dom mot motstรฅndaren och missat.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Kast med liten boll var aldrig vรฅr grej.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Skรคrp dig! Du ska inte dรถ รคnnu. Och du, allt det dรคr, โ€Now I am quietly waiting for the catastrophe of my personality to seem beautiful again, and interesting, and modern.โ€, รคr stulet och framfรถr allt trรถttsamt.
โ€“ Och! Tรคnk om du faktiskt trรคffar nรฅgon som fattar poรคngen nรคr vi presenterar oss som Space Cowboy, the Gangster of Love and Maurice.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Tre รถverraskningar i en. Jag beslรถt mig faktiskt fรถr att fรถrรคndra mitt liv en gรฅng sรฅ jag bytte telefonnummer.

[Tystnad.]

Anna, 39 รฅr
Det var jag. Det var jag som bytte telefonnumret.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Skitbra initiativ, hรถrru Space-y cowboy! Vem รคr Keyser Zรถse? Fattar du?

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Ja, naturligtvis fattar jag. Jag รคr vรคl inte trรถg, men skippa ironin. Jag fรถrsรถkte i alla fall. Sรฅ du har gett upp? Bara sรฅ?

Anna, 49 รฅr
The Vicar of Dibleyโ€ nรคra sรฅ.

Anna, 39 รฅr
Du har verkligen gett upp?
[Tystnar.]

[Tystnad.]

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Jag har nรฅgra bokidรฉer.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Yaaay! Weโ€™re back och nu รคr vรฅr catchphrase, โ€For Award Considerations Only.โ€

Anna, 49 รฅr
Men visst, bryt upp, bryt upp! Den nya dagen gryr. Oรคndligt รคr vรฅrt stora รคventyr sรฅ vore det inte skรถnt om monstret under sรคngen en dag blev kรคr i vรฅr skyddsรคngel.

Anna, 39 รฅr
Trip away; make no stay; Meet me all by break of day.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Jo, du รคr vรคl precis sรฅ. Ett jรคvla Pucko.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Det รคr inte Puck som sรคger det. Det รคr Obeโ€ฆ

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Oberon. Jag vet. Shut up nu! Positivt tรคnkande here we go. Jag ska minsann bรถrja anvรคnda de dyra svarta BLK DNM-jeansen och slรคnga Lindex-jeansen som jag anvรคnder fรถr att spara pรฅ de andra.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Ah, men va fan? Jag hรคngde inte ens med.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Fรถr du รคr inte hรคr.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Intentionen mรฅste vara attโ€ฆ

Anna, 49 รฅr

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ De s-t-o-r-a orden bรถrjade inte med mig. Ska jag sรคga nรฅgot klokt eller anvรคnda ytterligare en filmmetafor?

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Vi kรถr film.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Dรฅ รถnskar jag att jag hade en DeLorean.

Anna, 39 รฅr
Like if.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Hear me out! โ€œYour future hasnโ€™t been written yet โ€“ no oneโ€™s has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one.โ€
โ€“ Det var du som sa โ€Kรถr pรฅ film!โ€

Anna, 39 รฅr

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Hence, varfรถr vi mรฅste sluta mรถtas sรฅ hรคr.
โ€“ โ€™Halvlyckligโ€™ รคr fรถr รถvrigt ocksรฅ bรคttre pรฅ engelska. โ€™Half past happy.โ€™ Dรฅ har man รฅtminstone varit lycklig รคven om man nu รคr aningens fรถrbi.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Vi รคr som alla andra dรฅ.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Som lรฅter Atlanta brinna och Bobby stanna i duschen.

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Slรคpp taget.

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ Fรถr fan!

Anna, 39 รฅr
โ€“ Okej, fรถrlรฅt! Men bara den som gรฅtt vilse kan hitta den ovรคntade glรคntan i skogen. Tranโ€ฆ

Anna, 49 รฅr
โ€“ โ€ฆstrรถmer. โ€Pรฅ vรคg i det lรฅnga mรถrkret. Envist skimrar mitt armbandsur med tidens fรฅngna insekt.โ€
โ€“ Jag fรฅr vรคl gรถra som jag brukar dรฅ, gรฅ pรฅ alla A-brunnar bara fรถr att se vart det leder. Eller nรฅt.
